Hello! I am Mary-Clare Buckle. I have twin boys and I live with my husband Andrew in Abbotsbury, between Bridport, Weymouth and Dorchester.
Look out for our CalmFamily stall at the show, which I will be sharing with Kathleen Pearson (who also does BabyCalm and Toddler Calm classes in Poole and Bournemouth).
When did you start your small business and why?
I run Healthy Families and Happy Babies. I started my business as a BabyCalm consultant in 2017, but have been working supporting parents for several years before that. I helped to arrange the first UK training for ‘Doulas’ (women who support a woman during childbirth). I have run Parenting Support Groups and have helped as many parents as I can with various issues around looking after their babies, including breast-feeding help with La Leche League, where to get help, and I have written about our own experiences for print magazines. I am a Sling Peer Supporter and work at Weymouth and Dorchester NCT Sling Library.
I want to help enable parents - and prospective parents - to look forward to having children, so that parenting can be as joyful and as relaxing as possible.
The whole process of bringing up our lovely twins was so fulfilling for us and continues to be, as they grow up.
Tell us about your most memorable or greatest achievement so far:
My gorgeous twins! (I am also an Artist - and had a solo exhibition in Dubai, which was quite a big thing for me!)
Who is your biggest influence or role model?
We were lucky enough to have been recommended several influential books before our twins were born, The Continuum Concept by Jean Liedloff , Magical Child by JC Pearce and Three In A Bed by Deborah Jackson ..and my husband Andrew is a fantastic support for everything I do!
What do you hope to bring to Dorset Bump to Baby Show 2018?
I am on a mission to help parents to understand their new baby! After all the excitement and trepidation leading up to the birth, new mothers can sometimes feel isolated and a bit overwhelmed with the needs of their baby. Very few first time mothers have ever had a chance to even touch a newborn – let alone have any experience of looking after them. Even women who are professionally trained and work with babies can find things completely different when they have their own.
I like working with pregnant woman and new parents to try to help them to have as easy and pleasurable a life with their children as possible. It’s such a shame that many people, particularly here in the UK, see parenting as a chore, or they think their life will change irredeemably for the worse ... This is very sad and I want to be able to help prospective parents such that they can then look forward to having children and to help them make it the joy it should be!
I look forward to meeting parents at the show and talking about their babies.
What’s next for you?
I want to be building up my business such that I’m running regular classes and 1-1 consultations.
My other love is natural health: I have been studying nutrition, and using herbs and aromatherapy very successfully for about 30 years - so want to be spreading the word on this subject as well. I am particularly knowledgeable about natural fertility and immune system support to prevent illness.
If you could give one piece of advice for a new mum what would it be?
Trust your instincts, keep your baby close - and try to shield yourself from unwanted (but well meaning) advice from in-laws! Buy (and learn to love) a really good Sling - and use it all the time - and all good things will follow from that.
Just for fun...
City or Countryside? Love both – loved living in London – and being able to go to an all-night café if I fancied it, but also love our house in Abbotsbury with our fantastic big vegetable and medicinal herb garden and the best view of the sea from the bedroom
Bump or Baby? Seem to be sitting on the fence again – loved both - but because I had twins there was a stage where I was so big, it was hard to get myself in and out of small spaces like a toilet!
Chocolate or Chia Seeds? I have chocolate (organic of course!) powder mixed with chia seeds every morning
Mumpreneur or woman in business? Women in business
Tea or Coffee? Tea – but green of course!
Reading a book or watching a film? Again love both
Obsessively Tidy or Organised Chaos? organised (only just) chaos
