It’s never too early to introduce your baby to the joys of being in the water, it can be a little daunting, but there are many benefits for both child and parent.
After spending nine months in the womb, it doesn’t come as a surprise that babies have a real affinity and love for water. Swimming is one activity babies can do from birth, NHS guidelines state that babies do not need to have completed their injections, our youngest swimmer was just 2 weeks old!
Swimming can be hugely positive and rewarding for your whole family. There are further benefits for your baby too, especially if you join a fun, progressive class. Firstly, it is the only time your baby can be entirely independent (when experiencing gentle submersions). From birth, babies have a natural gag reflex which means that they instinctively hold their breath to avoid breathing in water. Only in the water, can a baby move freely and develop actions they wouldn’t otherwise be able to in their first year of life. ‘Swimming babies’ have the opportunity to develop crucial higher brain functions, core muscle development and
Many parents would also be happy to learn that regular swimming often improves eating and sleeping patterns! Taking your baby swimming does require some planning and organisation, but don’t be put off by this! Firstly, look for a clean, well-managed pool heated to 30degC or above. You’ll also need to ensure you have all the equipment you need: well-fitting swim nappies (we always advise a reusable or disposable swim nappy along with a Splash About neoprene nappy), a warm, large towel and preferably someone to help you get in and out of the pool.
At Puddle Ducks, we believe in promoting fun and enjoyment in the water, our classes are packed full of songs and activities, all geared towards teaching children to swim independently, without the use of armbands. Children can start Puddle Ducks at any time from birth to school age (up to 10 years). Parent and teacher stay in the water until your child can swim competently and class sizes are a maximum of 9 parent and child pairs.
Most importantly of all, swimming as a baby will instil a love and confidence in water for the rest of your child’s life, which when we are as lucky as we are to live where we live, on the South Coast, is so very important.
